There are 2 variants of M7, early ones with short frames numbered 22 -
26, 31 - 44, 112, 241 - 256, 318 - 324, 356, 357, and 667 - 676; and later
ones with long frames, and space at the front to fit air operated pull
& push equipment, numbered 21, 27 - 30, 45 - 60, 104 - 111, 123 -
133, 328, 374 - 379, 478, 480, and 481. 126 was rebuilt with a superheater,
and on withdrawal in 1937, its long frames were transplanted to previously
short framed 254. 672 was written off in May 1948 as a result of falling
down the Waterloo and City lift shaft. 30128 swapped identity with 30031
on withdrawal in 1961 and so did 30106 with 30667 to allow a brief survival
of the long frames. Short frame 245 survives in the National Collection
while long frame 53 survives at Swanage. Wheel base 7 6 -

with a leading zero between 1904 and 1922. At grouping the Southern acquired
49, 17 of which were not in use. The Southern repainted 12; 0125 which
survived to become 3125 and 30582, 050, 054, 0169, 0431, 0486, 0490, 0517,
0519, 0520 which survived to become 3520 and 30584, 0525, and 0524. One
of the engines sold out of service by the L&SWR was 488 sold to the
WD and thence to the East Kent to become EKR 5. This engine was bought
by the Southern in 1946 and became 3488 and then 30583; it now survives
on the Bluebell. The correct wheels for a Radial are:
